Oliver is 3 Months Old

I can't believe that Oliver is already 3 months old! The time has gone by so fast, just as everyone said it would...I go back to work next Monday which is going to be a difficult transition. I know that Mike will do a wonderful job taking care of him, but I will miss all the time I get to spend with him now. I am going to do my best to savor our last full week together. We are going to a class on 'going back to work' today and then we have our last baby massage class on Tuesday - I'm going to try to make this at least a weekly thing because Oliver really seems to love it. We have had a lot of fun together and I am going to miss it a lot.

I am also going to get in as many walks as we can. Oliver is starting to stay awake more on these walks and check out his world more and more. Here's Oliver and me at Lincoln park with Kati and Evelyn, and Agneiszka and Patrick (from our PEPS group).

Oliver is so snuggly now. When he is tired and cranky during the day, all he wants to do is snuggle on my shoulder like this. While I am often stuck walking around with him in this position for long periods of time and can't do anything else, I just love holding him. Pretty soon he will be too big to hold like this.

Oliver's personality is really starting to show. He has very distinct likes and dislikes already. For instance, he used to really like his swing, often falling asleep within seconds. But now he starts to cry within a few seconds of being in the swing. This really put a crimp in our ability to sit down together for dinner, so we went to Babies r' us and got a bouncy chair to see if this would do the trick, as Oliver really likes to bounce. Sure enough he loves it! He really likes the toys it came with, so much so that he smiles and laughs at them over and over when he is in that thing.

He also really likes the toy monkey hanging from his activity gym. It has a ring on it that when pulled plays twinkle little star. For some reason this shrill tune is captivating to Oliver. While he can't reliably grab the ring, if we put his hand on it, he will keep pulling it to make the song play over and over:

He also is such a wiggler that he is able to bounce in the chair himself already, which is nice for us too! We have been able to sit down to several meals together since this chair arrived. I know, he will probably be over it in a few weeks but we are enjoying his excitement while it lasts.

The other thing that he really loves is black and white designs - the bigger the better. He will laugh and stare at them as long as we will let him. We put them next to his changing table and in his crib. They instantly stopped his screaming during diaper changes and now will actually stop him from crying, even if he is hungry! This boy would rather look at wavy lines than eat! Don't worry, he also laughs and smiles at us too, especially when his daddy comes home from work. I will be looking forward to getting some of these sweet smiles when I come home from work too.

My Birthday

I turn 33 today and while it is hard being a year older, Mike and Oliver have made this year extra special. My big birthday present wasn't really for my birthday but something Mike promissed me when we got engaged...a wedding band to match my engagement ring. We were in graduate school and he couldn't afford a wedding band at the time (he sold his car to buy my engagement ring!). I love it!

Then on Friday he came home early from work with flowers and on Saturday, he got takeout from our favorite thai restaurant and desert from the bakery and a bottle of pinot noir (my favorite!) from one of the wineries we visited in Oregon a few years ago. But the Best present was that Mike did all the feedings with Oliver and I got to sleep for 8 glorious uninterupted hours! That hasn't happened since I was about 4 months pregnant!

But despite all these wonderful and thoughtful gifts, my happy baby is still the best birthday gift I could ask for.

Similarities

We have been going back and forth about who Oliver looks like most. At first we thought he looked more like me when I was a baby. After all he is blond and has blue eyes. This is me when I was a newborn (and big sis Wisty), and Oliver (also with Wisty):

But then Mike's mom brought his baby book and we realized that he looks even more like Mike. Here is Oliver and Mike, both at 11 weeks old (Oliver is wearing Mike's baptismal outfit):

And when Oliver smiles he is a dead ringer for Mike's baby smile:

I think Mike wins the look alike contest for now...I guess it's better for Oliver to look like his dad than his mom....

Grandpa Ken and Auntie Aleah

My dad and little sister came to meet Oliver for the first time. Aleah was a little apprehensive about holding her nephew - she is only 13 after all. But she was a pro by the end of the visit.

I remember holding her when Aleah was born... made me feel a little old ; )

Dad was very sweet with the little guy and took over burping duty for a few days.

We had a really nice visit and they even made us dinner so we could just enjoy our baby. Now all the immediate family has met Oliver.

Play dates with Evelyn

We have been friends with Kati and her husband Randy since we moved to Seattle in 2004. Kati was a post-doctoral fellow at the same time as me and we are both neuropsychologists. Kati works at the VA now but we have stayed good friends. We had talked about wanting to have kids in the next few years, but when I called her to tell her I was pregnant, I didn't expect her to say "so am I". She was due January 17 and I was due January 25. We were both going to have our babies at the same hospital and took all the childbirth classes together. I ended up having Oliver on December 23 and she had her baby girl (Evelyn) on January 23. We are both off work right now so we have had weekly "play dates" since Evie was born. It's great to catch up with her each week. The babies don't do much playing yet, but I'm sure that won't be far off. Here's a few pictures from our play dates - Mike and Randy even joined us last weekend.
